Dr. Jill Terhaar Lewis Selected to Present at National Conference

University Relations

CSUDr. Jill Terhaar Lewis, CSU associate professor of music, and Dr. Yiorgos Vassilandonakis from the College of Charleston will present a poster on their new music project titled: Contemporary Collaborations: New Music Projects for Voice Students July 9 in Chicago at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Conference.

Lewis and Vassilandonakis collaborated to create new vocal chamber music for their students. Lewis teaches voice and music history, and Vassilandonakis teaches composition and music theory. Contemporary Collaborations matches student vocalists from CSU work and student composers from CofC to create new chamber music compositions using the poetry of students from both universities.

Lewis said, “Working with a composer and performing the premiere of a new music composition can be one of the most educational and rewarding experiences for a musician, but this type of experience is not typically achieved at the undergraduate level, particularly for voice students. This collaborative process affords our students an invaluable experience that has led to professional growth and connections for our students.  We are delighted with the results!”

Contemporary Collaborations has resulted in four projects including eight concerts and several new music compositions with collaborations occurring roughly every two years.

The compositions and programs from this year’s collaborations will be printed and kept in the libraries of each university.
